Jack Smith’s Medium Format Color Work
One of the pleasures in viewing the work of a particular artist one admires is the discovery of something strange and unexpected, if only in spirit. The other night I checked around to see which of Jack Smith’s photographs were available on Tumblr and decided to present some which hitherto haven’t been shown in this venue. These, I believe, are some of those from the late fifties shot on two and a quarter inch chrome (transparency) stock. I have a camera similar to the one used by Jack, but shoot on negative stock when working in color, which is a hell of a lot cheaper. Certainly, much of the quality of these pictures (the rich intensity of the color) depends on Smith’s use of chrome film, but I maintain that the most important element in these works is the community he was able to gather around him at that time.
Wow. All I see is Faust.
Fun Fact: Jimmy and Alec Baldwin were on a cop show together many years ago. We’ve got the video footage to prove it.

These tripped-out Texans White Denim played songs off their upcoming LP Corsicana Lemonade this weekend at a showcase for the KUTX radio station in Austin, Texas. The track, also titled “Corsicana Lemonade,” features a more refined sound from the group’s typically wild, rough-and-tumble rhythms.
